Then -- poof -- it vanished into rubble. In late January, without advance word to the public, the Cleveland Clinic demolished its Chester Conference Center, which included the one-time private girls school, which had relocated to Shaker Heights in The footprint of the old school and attached structures will become a temporary, space parking lot, a placeholder for future development.
Historic preservationists were caught off guard. The demolition raised a host of questions, from how the Clinic handles historic preservation to how medical centers and universities often create dead zones around their edges as they grow, which can inhibit economic development and create an image of isolation. Those issues are especially pertinent now that the Clinic is getting ready for a new phase of master planning for its acre main campus in Cleveland, where 25, of its 40, regional employees work.
Toby Cosgrove, chief executive officer of the Clinic, said Friday he was hearing in detail for the first time about a loophole in city planning regulations that allowed the demolition of the Chester Conference Center without a prior public hearing -- and that he'd consider remedies. He added that "there's always a tension that exists between preservation and bringing great new facilities into existence.
Cosgrove and William Peacock III, the Clinic's chief of operations, said the institution did an extensive analysis before removing the Chester Conference Center, which the Clinic had used for several decades.
The complex, a hodgepodge with different floor levels and outmoded electrical and mechanical systems, would have cost tens of millions of dollars to renovate and wasn't worth the expense.
He said that before seeking a demolition permit, he contacted the city's planning department and the nonprofit Fairfax Renaissance Development Corp. No objections came up, and the Clinic hasn't received complaints, he said.
But Crowther grew worried in November when she saw a chain-link fence go up around the conference center and the old school. Donate Now. Skip to main content. Close X. Adjust Text size. As local architect August Fluker sees it, realizing that vision will require a shift to a culture of co-creation and ongoing communication between the community and the Clinic. As long as they start using that lens, they can become part of the solution. Along with approximately mixed-income units both apartments and townhomes , the project will also add new greenspace, new streets, and improvement opportunities for existing area homes.
Fluker thinks that type of inclusion can also be transformative for the Clinic in keeping with the overall vision. It would create a softer edge along Cedar and reinvigorate the streets with lots of shops and businesses. If you want to go far, go together. Our publication will dedicate 12 weeks of community coverage this spring, similar to the initiative we undertook this year in Old Brooklyn.
